Dual Diagnosis

Dual diagnosis programs combine the treatment of mental health and substance use issues to address both simultaneously. We help individuals and families acknowledge the complex relationship between these two problems and encourage them to focus on their recovery needs for both conditions. In addition to treatment for mental health issues, we provide diagnostic evaluation and treatment for a wide range of substances including alcohol, opiates, benzodiazepines and prescription and illicit drugs.

The multidisciplinary team at River Point Behavioral Health works closely with individuals and their families to establish a recovery plan and develop healthy, effective coping mechanisms. During an individual’s hospital stay, our specially designed dual diagnosis program will focus on topics such as:

  • Interactions between substance addictions and psychiatric illness
  • Biological, psychological and social components of mental illness and addiction
  • Recovery strategies to promote wellness
  • Education on mental illness and addiction
  • Managing and reducing symptoms
  • Building social support and communication skills
  • Rebuilding relationships
  • Medication compliance and education
  • Reducing relapse
  • Coping with persistent symptoms
  • Developing and maintaining healthy lifestyles

Discharge planning starts on the day of admission. The goal of the dual diagnosis program is to equip patients and families with the tools they need to live productively and successfully transition to the next level of care.

Dual Diagnosis Continuum

  • Hospital-based detoxification (medical model, patients seen by physicians)
  • Inpatient rehabilitation
  • Partial hospitalization
  • Intensive outpatient rehabilitation
