Child & Adolescent Services

Childhood is a time of discovery, learning and interacting with the world in new and exciting ways. It is also a critical period when attachments and relationships take shape. The quality of the relationships formed in this developmental stage have lifelong impacts. For some children, this stage is characterized by separation, anxiety, loss and grief. At River Point Behavioral Health, we are sensitive to the needs of children and work closely with parents and other support agencies to help children work towards healing and recovery.

Adolescence is a developmental transition that presents many unique challenges. For many, this period of change and vulnerability—combined with outside stressors—can lead to intense stress and emotion. Our staff is dedicated to helping adolescents and parents understand the difference between the normal ups and downs of adolescence and the emotional and behavioral responses that may require inpatient treatment.

We offer specialized care for children (ages 5 to 10) and adolescents (ages 11 to 17) with emotional, developmental, substance abuse and behavioral health problems that interfere with one or more areas of daily life. Children experiencing a mental health or substance abuse crisis may become impulsive, anxious, defiant, aggressive, moody, sad, depressed, restless, distracted or withdrawn from loved ones.

Our caring and dedicated staff is trained to help children and families learn positive and healthy ways to cope with stress, improve mental health and daily functioning and maintain recovery. Daily activities aim to increase problem solving, improve communication skills, enhance self-esteem and foster a sense of self-worth. Family participation is very important and a key component of our program. Families are highly encouraged to participate in the treatment process by attending family sessions and maintaining regular contact. Our experience has shown the more the family participates and provides support, the more the adolescent will demonstrate positive changes.

Only research-based treatment is provided at River Point Behavioral Health. The therapeutic approaches we use include cognitive behavioral, family systems, trauma informed care and dialectical behavioral therapy. Treatment is based on an individualized treatment plan which is developed with the child or adolescent and guardian.

Inpatient care is provided for children and adolescents who are in need of 24-hour hospitalization. This program is for children and adolescents who need a structured environment while receiving therapeutic care. A no cost, confidential assessment is conducted at admission to decide the right level of care for a patient.

There is a pool on site for adolescent patients.
